BDS logo competition

copy-pasted from KABOBfest;
In 2005, over 170 Palestinian civil society organizations united behind a call to the world to impose Boycotts, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) on Israel until it complies with international law. Now, the Palestinian BDS Campaign National Committee (BNC) is calling on YOU to design a BDS logo for the campaign!!

This is an open call to all creative artists/designers who feel they can create a "brand" image for this fast growing Palestinian and international campaign. The new logo design must fulfill the following criteria:

1. The design must be new, unique, innovative and easily recognizable;
2. It must include the three letters B, D, and S – BDS has already
become a brand, but it needs a suitable graphic;
3. It should preferably use the four colors of the Palestinian flag;
4. It must express the spirit of the international BDS movement — a
campaign of civil resistance that is aimed at ending Israel’s occupation
and apartheid policies. Understand this in whichever creative way you like!

The last date to submit entries is September 8th 2009. Please submit entries ONLY via email to info@BDSmovement.net as JPEG or PDF files. In the email you send, please include

* your full name,
* country of residence, and
* phone number.

You will receive an email confirmation of your submission.

The winning design will be adopted as the official BDS logo, to be used in BDS publications and official communications worldwide. Designer of the winning logo will receive a symbolic cash prize. All submitted entries will be posted on the website in an online gallery of all submissions. The Secretariat of the BDS National Committee will decide on the winning logo.

This is YOUR chance to support the campaign to end Israel's regime of
apartheid.

Please send any questions or comments to info@BDSmovement.net.

We look forward to receiving your submission!*

A letter to the Melbourne International Film Festival

Newslinks on Ken Loach's boycott of MIFF: 1, 2

From Electronic Intifada:
Open letter, Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel, 7 July 2009

The following open letter was sent to the Melbourne International Film Festival by the The Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel (PACBI) on 5 July 2009:

The Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel (PACBI) is writing with grave concern over the Melbourne International Film Festival's cultural partnership with the Israeli state, as advertised in your promotional material. We write to urge you not to accept Israeli government funding or sustain this partnership with a state that practices occupation, colonialism and apartheid, as confirmed in a recent, authoritative legal study produced by the Human Sciences Research Council in South Africa and, months before, in a strategic position paper issued by the Palestinian civil society Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions National Committee (BNC).

Collaborating with the Israeli government less than six months after Israel ended its bloody war against the occupied Gaza Strip would be tantamount to an implicit endorsement of the war crimes it has committed and is still committing in Gaza. You would be accepting blood money and partnering with the culture of a colonial and apartheid regime that continues to blatantly violate international law and Palestinian human rights with utter impunity.

By sustaining a cultural partnership with Israel in your festival, you would be sharing your artistic stage with a power that attempts to suppress, expropriate or suffocate the art and culture of the indigenous Palestinian people, with its filmmakers, musicians, artists, writers and poets. We hope you agree that this is the opposite of everything that culture and filmmaking should represent.

Israel's most recent brutal military assault on the Gaza Strip left over 1,440 Palestinians dead, predominantly civilians, of whom 431 were children, and injured another 5,380. The 1.5 million Palestinians in the besieged Gaza Strip, the overwhelming majority of whom are refugees who were violently expelled from their homes by Zionist forces in 1948, were subjected to three weeks of relentless Israeli state terror, whereby Israeli warplanes systematically targeted civilian areas, reduced whole neighborhoods and vital civilian infrastructure to rubble and partially destroyed scores of schools, including several run by the UN, where civilians were taking shelter. This criminal assault came after 18 months of an ongoing, crippling Israeli siege of Gaza with the clear goal of shattering all spheres of life and collectively punishing the entire population of Gaza, prompting the UN Special Rapporteur for Human Rights to describe it as "a prelude to genocide." International human rights organizations and UN organizations are now carrying out war crimes investigations into Israel's military assault on Gaza.

The recent brutal attack on Gaza is yet another mark in Israel's long and vicious colonial history. For the last 61 years, Israel has superimposed its colonial presence on historic Palestine and for the last 42 years, Israel has militarily occupied the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip. Despite the "peace process" which began 16 years ago, Israel routinely violates the Palestinians' most fundamental human rights with impunity, as documented by local and international human rights organizations. Israel extra-judicially kills Palestinian leaders and activists and keeps over 8,000 Palestinians imprisoned, including numerous members of parliament. Israel is destroying Palestinian homes; killing Palestinian children; and uprooting hundreds of thousands of Palestinian trees. As we write, Israel continues to build illegal Jewish colonies on occupied Palestinian land and an apartheid infrastructure of Jewish-only roads, blockades and the apartheid wall, declared illegal by the International Court of Justice at the Hague in 2004. Israel denies millions of Palestinian refugees their internationally-recognized right to return to their lands. Moreover, Israel maintains a system of racial discrimination against its own Palestinian citizens reminiscent of South African apartheid.

In the face of decades of such unrelenting oppression, Palestinian civil society has called upon people of conscience throughout the world to take a stand in support of our struggle for freedom and the realization of our inalienable human and national political rights by heeding our call for boycott, divestment and sanctions against Israel. Indeed, as the prominent filmmaker Ken Loach said recently, "Who are we, that we should not heed their call?"

Virtually all Palestinian filmmakers, artists and cultural figures stand behind this call and have urged their colleagues worldwide to boycott Israeli cultural and arts institutions due to their complicity in perpetuating Israel's occupation and other forms of oppression against the Palestinian people. In response, in the past few months, groups of artists, comedians, filmmakers, students and academics throughout the world have consolidated their efforts to show solidarity with Palestinians, to condemn Israel's war crimes and its apartheid regime, and to call for effective political action such as boycotts, divestment drives and sanctions. Many prominent international cultural figures including John Berger, Ken Loach, Arundhati Roy, Roger Waters, John Williams, among others, have declared their support for the boycott.

As was the case in South Africa, where international solidarity played a crucial role in bringing down apartheid by boycotting the economic, sports and cultural institutions of the apartheid regime, we sincerely hope you will not partner in any capacity with Israel, until it fulfills its obligations under international law and fully recognizes the Palestinian people's right to live in full equality and freedom in their homeland.

Scottish Trade Union Congress supports boycott of Israel

From Jerusalem Post;
The Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC), the umbrella organization of all trade unions in Scotland, has voted unanimously to endorse a boycott of Israeli goods at its annual conference in Perth, central Scotland.

The STUC also voted to "review" its relationship with the Histadrut at the three-day conference, which finished on Thursday, and now joins the Irish Trade Union Congress, which voted to support a boycott of Israel in 2007.

At the conference, the STUC General Council presented a report calling for a boycott, disinvestments and sanctions against Israel "until it complies with international laws and agreed principles of human rights."

The call was supported by a plea to all Scottish trade unions to support the boycott, divest in Israeli companies and call for sanctions.

Speaking before Wednesday's debate, STUC general-secretary Grahame Smith said that "the STUC General Council is recommending support for boycott and calls for sanctions against Israel because of its attacks on the human rights of Palestinian people and its breaches of international laws."

The STUC press statement can be read here. Do note in the JPost article, as usual in Israeli press, any news on the growing international appeal of BDS [Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions against Israeli] is followed by a comment of an Apartheid apologist, stating that boycott is 'one-sided', misguided, unhelpful, fails to understand the complexity of the issue, yada, yada...

F**k Veolia

There are unconfirmed reports that the Galway City council has voted 12 to 2 to adopt a motion against utilizing the illegal-settlement-profiteering company Veolia for its city transport services. Veolia has now lost Stockholm metro (a 3.5 billion Euro contract) and Bordeaux contracts. In short, taking part in the occupation doesn't pay off.

Palestinian BDS Committee asks Tehran to go from rhetoric to action

A day following Ahmadinejad's publicized speech in Geneva, the Palestinian Campaign for Boycotts, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) has criticized Iran for business ties with Veolia Environment and Alstrom. The two French companies are active in the occupied West Bank, profiteering from the illegal Israeli settlements there. At the same time the municipality of Tehran is negotation with Veolia regarding local transport systems. Alstrom has an office in Tehran, and has obtained multi-million dollar contracts with Iranian state agencies. The Palestinian BDS National Committee (BNC) appealed to Iran to "take the necessary steps to ban Veolia and Alstom and their subsidiaries from any contracts and operations in the country."

BDS!

Yesterday was the global Global Day of Action for Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions, coinciding with Land Day. More than 75 demonstrations in at least 19 countries were held to support the Palestinian call for BDS. At the same time Maan notes that Israeli exports are effectively declining as a result of the BDS struggle and the international outrage against the Israeli massacres. According to a report from the Israel Manufacturers Association, 21% of Israeli exporters face difficulties selling abroad. The report notes particular difficulties in selling exports to the UK and the Scandinavian countries.

Irish Trade Unions to launch campaign to boycott Israel

The global BDS (Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions) movement is growing. This week the Irish Congress of Trade Unions declared that it would launch a campaign for boycott of Israeli goods.

From the Belfast Telegraph:
"Trade unionists are to launch a boycott of Israeli goods as part of a major campaign to secure a peaceful settlement in the Middle East, Stormont heard today.

The Irish Congress of Trade Unions (ICTU) launched a report on Israel and Palestine compiled by senior members who visited the troubled region.

As controversy continues to rage over the death toll in Gaza caused by the recent Israeli military attacks, trade union leaders announced they are to hold a major conference this year to act as a springboard for their campaign."

Norway: Trondheim Labour Party demands economic boycott against Israel

This weekend, at a meeting of the Trondheim branch of the Norwegian Labour Party (the main governing party in the country), a motion calling for economic boycott against Israel was passed by 30 votes in favour, 9 against. The motion will be presented at the annual party district conference of Sør-Trøndelag in mid-March. If approved at the party district conference, the motion will be presented at the national party assembly in April.

The Trondheim party branch has also demanded that a public pensions fund (Statens Pensjonsfond Utland) gets rid of its investments in the Israel Electric Company, in line with the Ethical Guidelines of the fund.

The Labour Party has a separate Gaza theme page at its website.

South African dockers will refuse to unload Israeli cargo shipments

A union of port workers in Durban, South Africa, South African Transport and Allied Workers Union (SATAWU), has declared that it will refuse to unload cargo from Israeli ships, reports Pulse Media. The SATAWU general secretary Randall Howard stated yesterday that the union supports the "historic and heroic struggle of the Palestinian people for self-determination". In regards to which products will be blocked from being unloaded, Howard stated that the union wouldn't differentiate between vegetables and weaponry, all Israeli products will be barred from entry into the South African market.

SAWATU has a combined membership of 82,325. Last year the Durban dockers refused to unload a Chinese shipment of weapons for Zimbabwe (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7). The determination of the Durban dockers is a clear sign that internationalist trade union solidarity is alive and kicking.

See statement by the Palestine Solidarity Campaign and COSATU on the SAWATU action. Protests are being held today, and on Sunday there will be rallies in Durban and Cape Town.

Starbucks to close 300 shops

Starbucks, a company targetted by boycott campaigns in the Arab world, has declared that it will close down 300 cafes worldwide. The CEO of Starbucks, Howard Schultz, has declared that he's an 'active Zionist' and in 1998, Shultz was awarded the "The Israel 50th Anniversary Tribute Award" from the Jerusalem Fund of Aish Ha-Torah for "playing a key role in promoting a close alliance between the United States and Israel".

Israeli company threatens to sue Swedish scientists

This might appear a bit off-topic, but it is perhaps just one example on how the Israeli military-industrial complex conducts its business. Two Swedish scientists, both professors of phonetics, has written an article titled Charlatanry in forensic speech science: A problem to be taken seriously. In their article they point to problems of accuracy in results when using lie detectors. I'm not an expert in phonetics (in fact, I didn't even know that it was an academic discipline of its own until today), but the fact that lie detectors cannot provide 100% accurate results is rather wellknown.

Nevertheless the Israeli company Nemesysco (geez, how do come up with names like that?), which holds patents on lie detectors, has sent threating letters to the magazine in which the two scientists are warned of lawsuits if the two scientists continue to argue their positions in public. Not that any sane court in the world would so bluntly stifle academic debate and research, but the pattern of behaviour is still worrying.

In Israel, the 'security industry' has grown markedly over the past years. The reputation of Israel as a though, brutal and technologically advanced police state is being used as a corporate brand to market repressive technologies to police, military and security services around the world. (CNN's Business Traveller ran a show back in 2006 on 'doing business in Israel', which partly dealt with this sector) It's high time to call for boycott not only for fruits and vegetables, but also demand breaking the cooperation between our police and military institutions and the Israeli 'security industry'.

Malaysia: 2,000 restaurants boycott Coca-Cola in protest of Gaza killings

In protest of the murder of civilians in Gaza, an organization representing more than 2,000 restuarants in Malaysia have to boycott U.S. products. The boycott will be initiated on Friday this week. Thus Coca-Cola will disappear from the menues.

But to be honest, who needs sugar-loaded Coca-Cola when you can drink a chilled can of delicious grass jelly (photo below)?

Boycott Veolia

The multinational company Veolia (formerly Connex), which amongst other things run public transport systems around several countries, is an active participant in the illegal occupation of Palestinian areas. Veolia is building an railway line in the occupied West Bank, in violation of international law. The railway line is intended for Israeli settlers only, and cuts through Palestinian areas.

See for example a report at Diakonia website (in Swedish), article in the Christian daily Dagen or report from al-Jazeera (at youtube).

There are several ways you can act. You can contact Veolia or any of their subsidiaries, and declare your opposition to their involvement with Israeli Apartheid policies. You can also pressure local politicians not to use Veolia for public transport services.

Concretely, regarding Veolia's bid to keep running the Stockholm metro railway system, you can sign an online petition. As a Stockholmer you should also write to the local politicians and newspapers. The decision is taken on January 20, 2009, so time is running out. Get Veolia out of Stockholm!

---

Update: Veolia lost the bid for the 3+ billion euro contract. The Hong Kong-based firm MTR won the contract. The SL (Stockholm Local Traffic) board motivated their decision of economic and logistic basis. We cannot assert at this point whether the protests against Veolia's West Bank project had an impact on the decision.

South Africa: ANC condemns Israel's "horrendous attacks"

Perhaps no-one knows the importance of international solidarity, better than those who struggled against Apartheid in South Africa (a regime that, unsurprisingly, had good relations with fellow racist settler-state Israel). Below is a statement of the ANC, themselves once a resistance movement branded as terrorists by Western governments, condemning the Israeli atrocities;

"Statement issued by the African National Congress January 6 2008

STATEMENT OF THE AFRICAN NATIONAL CONGRESS ON ISRAEL'S ATTACKS ON GAZA

The ANC is unambiguous in condemning the horrendous attacks that are currently taking place in Gaza.

We believe that it is way beyond time that the Israeli government accepts the position outlined by the United Nations (UN); most notably in the UN Human Rights Commission Resolution of June 1996.

It is clear to the ANC that as long as Israel continues to occupy land rightfully belonging to the Palestinian people, there will not be a lasting solution to the problems and conflict in the Middle East region. The ANC has always firmly believed that the Palestinian people have a right to exist within a sovereign state with secure borders alongside a sovereign Israeli state.

The ANC calls for an immediate end to the ongoing Israeli bombing and ground attacks of civilians in Gaza, which has led to the death of hundreds of civilians and injury to thousands more. Collective punishment is not going to resolve the enmity between Palestine and Israel; what will move the peace process forward is addressing the root cause of the conflict.

Israel is in violation of international laws governing retaliatory engagements and is creating a deep humanitarian crisis.

We call on the leaders of the international community to do more than condemn the ongoing hostility against the people of Palestine and to demand that Israel withdraw from all occupied territories in Palestine and ends the siege."
