Protest in Tel Aviv yesterday, condemning killing in Bil'in

More than a thousand people demonstrated in Tel Aviv yesterday evening, taking a procession outside the Security Ministry to protest their outrage over the murder of unarmed Palestinian demonstrator Ibrahim Abu Rahma in the West Bank village of Bil'in on Friday. At the end of the rally, Hadash Knesset member Dov Khenin caid that Abu Rahma had been killed in cold blood. Khenin also stated that Ehud Barak has a personal responsibility for the prevailing atmosphere in the occupied West Bank. In his speech, Khenin also mentioned the shooting of U.S. activist Tristan Anderson, who is yet to recover from his injuries.

Protest in Tel Aviv today, condemning the murder of Ibhrahim Abu Rahma in Bil'in

Dov Khenin, Knesset member of Hadash, has issued a call for peace forces to join a demonstration in Tel Aviv today April 18, to condemn the murder of Ibrahim Abu Rahma. The 30-year old Abu Rahma, was killed yesterday by Israeli Occupation Forces during a peaceful protest in Bil'in, West Bank. The rally will assemble at King George Avenue 19.30 p.m., and procede to the "Security" Ministry.

Fellow Hadash Knesset member, Afu Agbaria, has labelled the killing "a henious crime" and "a cold-blooded murder". Furthermore, he stated that "The martyrdom of the Palestinian demonstrator in Bil'in reveals the ugly face of the Government of Israel - the Lieberman rightwing of which is not interested in peace -, a Government which allows the fascist rightwing elements to wreak havoc, unleashes the army in order to protect the settlers so they can continue their attacks on the children of the Palestinian people."

Germany: Gaza solidarity demonstration in Munich, January 24

Ma'an News Agency reports that "[m]ore than two thousand people rallied on Saturday in Munich, Germany for the fourth consecutive week protesting the Israeli offensive against the Gaza Strip.

Protestors raised pictures of the destruction left by Israeli warplanes and military tanks in Gaza as well as signs calling for an end to Israeli occupation of Palestine."

Negev in uproar, thousands protest atrocities in Gaza

Thousands of Arabs with Israeli citizenships gathered in the Negev, to protest the ongoing aggression against the people of Gaza. The protest is one of around 130 protest actions organized by the Arab Higher Monitoring Committee since the beginning of the Gaza massacre.

At the rally, Knesset member Talab El-Sana (of the now prohibited Ra'am-Ta'al alliance) demanded that the Israeli leaders be sent to The Hague to face war crimes trials.

South Africa: Protests will continue

The Palestine Solidarity Committee has vowed to continue their mass mobilizations against the Gaza massacre. Yesterday a rally was held outside the Egyptian embassy, protesting the complicity of the Mubarak regime in the killings of the people of Gaza.

One blog can’t change the world

- but the will and actions of millions of people around the world sure can! In days like these feelings of despair and hopelessness are never far away. But remember that there are so many things that can be done in order to halt the aggression and massacre against the people of Gaza. Don’t think you’re the only one watching the evening news in anguish, don’t think you’re the only one having sleepless nights, don’t think you’re the only one constantly bearing the latent urge to scream of anger and indignation.

Alone, we cannot achieve anything. But through collective efforts results can be accomplished, probably beyond our own imaginations. The fact that a resolution, be it that it is inadequate in many ways, calling on Israel to halt the aggression has been passed in the U.N. Security Council would never have happened without the massive mobilizations for Gaza solidarity taking place around the world.

Let there be no illusions. The Israeli state has since long proved to be completely insensitive to international condemnations (amongst other things, Israel hold the world record in breaching U.N. General Assembly resolutions). Only if protests will have concrete economic & diplomatic impact, there will be shifts in the behaviour of the Israeli political elite. Some examples;

- Call for the European Union to freeze its trade agreement with Israel. The European Union is Israel's most important trading partner, and the free trade agreement is extremely favourable to the Israelis. In essence, European taxpayers are subsidising the Israeli economy. The trade agreement is introduced by a human rights clause, stipulating that Israel has to abide by certain human rights standards and the European Union should monitor the conduct of Israel in this regard. It would be extremely easy for the European Union to freeze the trade agreement on human rights grounds, as was done with the trade agreement with Uzbekistan in 2005.

- Call on the U.S. to suspend its military aid to Israel. Why should American taxpayers should bail out the Israeli war machine as it is dropping white phosphor bombs on one of the most densely populated areas in the world?

- Call on Arab governments to suspend their complicity with the occupation of Palestine. If states like Egypt or Qatar would cancel their oil exports to Israel, it wouldn’t take long before the Israeli state would be put to its knees. Many have pointed out the absurdity of the Egyptian government allowing oil exports to Israel, whilst enforcing the blockade on Gaza.

- Pressure corporations involved in economic activities in Occupied Palestinian Terrorities to pull out. One succesfull example is the Swedish company ASSA Abloy, which decided to pull out from an illegal West Bank settlement factory due to public pressure. An example on an ongoing campaign are the calls for boycott of Veolia, currently involved in building an Apartheid railway line on occupied Palestinian land.

So how? Three simple examples.

1) Protest: Local demonstrations are held throughout the find. Google and find out were they take place (initially I had the ambition to compile list of demonstrations worldwide, but that task quickly proved to great). Bring friends and family.
2) Organize: Join an organization working with solidarity with Palestine. Examples include International Solidarity Movement, Palestine Solidarity Campaign (Britain), Fellesutvalget for Palestina in Norway, Palestinagrupperna in Sweden, Ireland Palestine Solidarity Committee, Palestine Solidarity Movement (U.S.), Palestine Solidarity Committee of South Africa, Comité de Solidaridad con la Causa Árabe (Spain) and many more.
3) Write: Write letter and blogposts, to local newspapers and national politicians, demand breaking diplomatic and economic links to Israel.

Nicaragua - in solidarity with Gaza

Hundreds of Palestinians and Nicaraguans gathered at Rotonda Rubén Darío in Managua, to condemn the massacre against the Palestinian people conducted by the Israeli state. Amongst the crowd, the Palestinian, Nicaraguan and FSLN flags were seen.


Also, the Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega has come out strongly against the Israeli atrocities. In a statement on the conflict, he said that "I want... to ask the international community to make all necessary efforts to stop the criminal acts of the Israeli government against the suffering Palestinian people,". Moreover he has criticized countries like the United States and Israel, which according to Ortega "spend (money) to destroy highways, kill children and entire families in Iraq and Afghanistan, instead of investing for the development of all peoples."

Tear gas and rubber bullets against West Bank protest

A protest at the Apartheid Wall in Nilin was attacked by Israeli Occupation Forces today, according to Svd.se (Swedish daily newspaper). The air was filled with gas, as Israeli peace activists and Palestinian demonstrated to show support to the besieged population in Gaza.

The same article also carries a short report of viewpoint amongst Israelis in Jerusalem. A statement by an Israeli 17-year old pinpoints the racist logic of the ongoing massacre; "-What do I think of civilian deaths? It's sad, but it's not my problem. Hamas are animals, we are civilized.".

The second round of Philippine protests for Gaza took place today, outside the Israeli embassy in Makati, Metro Manila. At a protest action at in Metro Manila, the Philippines, pro-Gaza demonstrators threw a giant black shoe replica at the Israeli embassy, recalling the action of brave Iraqi journalist Munthadar Al-Zaidi. Apparently a youtube video of the action is on its way, I'll post it when it comes up.

On December 30, 2009, several civil society organizations and political parties gathered at the Israeli embassy in Seoul to denounce Israel's slaughter of Palestinians.
